It was a long weekend, Colgate’s fall break, so several friends scattered around Europe descended upon my lagoon for the weekend.  Despite a miscommunication in travel plans, all of my visitors were accounted for by Friday evening.  Although my last midterm was on Thursday afternoon, it was on Saturday that I had the opportunity to truly show my Venetian education.  Our friend Julia met her parents in Venice and Howard and I were the designated tour guides.  With Chris and Alex in tow, we all piled onto a vaporetto.  Howard and I regurgitated seven weeks of class work to provide a political and architectural history of the city.  We walked along the city’s major thoroughfares and took a traghetto across the Grand Canal.  Julia reported, after we enjoyed a dinner of cichetti and spritzes, that her parents were blown away by our wealth of Venetian knowledge.

 

Although Julia left early Sunday morning, we took Chris and Alex through the Museo Correr and the Palazzo Ducale and across to Palladio’s Church of San Giorgio Maggiore.  Although such a cultural weekend was welcomed by the London crowd, we did our best to find that elusive Venetian nightlife.  We froze in the students campo and went to the discoteca, and even found a pub to watch American sports which was decorated with several pieces of Colgate memorabilia.  Now it’s my fall break, so I’m off to Vienna with Caroline, Hiep and Preston for the long weekend.
